Before getting a horse of your own, it is best to learn what kind of care they require. To keep a horse's coat healthy, they need to be brushed, groomed and bathed on a regular basis, and receive routine health checks by a veterinarian. Horses require regular exercise, yearly vaccinations, yearly Coggins test (for Equine Infectious Anemia), monthly deworming, in addition to any health issues that may arise in between checks.

It is important for all horse owners to research common equine illnesses, so that they can look out for signs of disease or infection. There are many online resources that can point you in the right direction. Please note that you should never diagnose your horse on your own- you should consult your equine veterinarian.

Once you get to know your horse, you will be able to determine if any behaviors seem out of the ordinary, or your horse just seems 'off'. When horses are acting unusually, it may be anything from a change in weather or feed, to a serious medical condition. The sooner that you contact your veterinarian, the better, as your vet will be able to rule out any severe illnesses or health issues. It is important that you know what kind of feed your horse is eating, what kind of exercise regiment they are on, and the dates your horse has received any medical treatment. This information will be helpful to your vet in the event that care is needed.
